Re: blood'n'booze
jsut noticed: your knoife is by Victorinox, the Swiss manufacturer contracted by the Swiss military for making swiss army knives. I have one (the the engraved year on main blade says 03), given me by my first BF ever (at age 9...I was precocious)

Yea, I am a long time Swiss FanBoi and have several in my collection. I always carry small one in my keychain. Can’t go to an adventure without big one. Actually got SwissTool coming in soon because I started to miss my old one to Ukraine aid package early this year.

Hey Umnir..
Do have Opinel knives in your collection? We used to use them on picnics in the mountains.

I’ve had several in sizes and woods. I like the aesthetics a lot and the edge geometry is superb (although weak). That being said no matter how fancy version you get they will always be budget style ”peasant” or ”penny knives” as knives alike have been called. I mostly find the locking ring operation rather tiresome in long run and the locking can vary from bank vault to certain bleeding to come. They are certainly good for cheese cutting but for laborous thing.. I guess the French aren’t famous for that.Lizzieborden wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 11:48 pm Hey Umnir..

I still have the old Opinel, wood handle, that I used on school excursions to the mountains. They are certainly good for cheese cutting
It does seem cheap... but also trusty. And, yes, it was used to cut gruyere, tomme, and vacherin (that last one is the best cheese EVER)
But of course we also all had a Victorinox (soldier version) for serious stuff.
French weaponry (let alone knives) not that good. But the Citroen Traction Avant and the DS were impressive as f. !
My father (Requiescat in pace) used to collect European cars (French mainly) , and my uncle went for US cars (chevrolet "Trifives") .
Oops gettin off topic.
I'm gonna start a thread on cars
And reduce the booze!
on my 4th Margarita...Had a tough night

France actually got tons of absolutely amazing knife artesans and their eye for aesthetics is really good. I just lost hope again last time when I ordered nice ebony handled Laguiole but it had wonky blade like it was put together by drunk idiot. The paper work inside for artesan braggery was a joke. Laguioles are highly regarded but you NEVER know what to get.
If you want tank/workhorse French knife get Douk-Douk. It was aimed to be sold in colonial French countries and it has same kind of cult following like the Opinel. Lot’s of Douks were used in French Legion and criminal gangs hammered the handle so that it would not fold on you as they are non-locking knives.

ESEE Izula II (with black oxide finish on blade).
ESEE is pretty popular brand among outdoorsy folks.
It’s smaller handy knife, named after bullet ant that lives in the Amazon.

Kiyv Mule (in Ukrainian Nemiroff pear vodka) and Finnish beer + cigar + SwissTool for cutting the joint. Good times. Got really nice buzz from the cigar when I’m almost done now.
