Retro game criteria

Post by Lizzieborden » Sat Sep 24, 2022 1:25 am

inquisitive Lizzie is (yet again) curious:
is there a cutoff date for a game to qualify as retro ??
Ok, Blood, Doom, quake. RTCW, ...all retro. But what is the magical year that makes a game retro?
1996 ?
2000 ?
2005 ?
Is Max Payne 2 retro? If not, why not?

Dates may better serve to set the lower and upper limits of an influential technology behind video game "eras" like say 1993 (BSP's popularized by Doom) and 2004 (Per Pixel Lighting popularized by Doom 3), so forth and so on. "Retro", however, is a different animal and clearly more subjective.

I suppose if you can no longer run it natively on a current iteration of the platform, it should be "retro" enough?
